NSAIDs are Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs. They are now widely used in place of old-style steroids to help dogs that suffer from various pain and joint conditions including hip dysplasia and osteo-arthritis. The most popular name in canine NSAIDs is Rimadyl for Dogs but there are other products available.
NSAIDs are a good choice because any canine arthritis treatment will need to be used indefinitely. This is because there is no way of curing the disease, only slowing its progress and offering pain relief to our pets. NSAIDs have fewer side effects for the majority of patients than steroids do. This means the large majority of dogs that respond to treatment with products such as Rimadyl experience fewer negative responses than they would have done with more old-fashioned treatments. The downside is that NSAIDs tend to have more serious side effects if they do occur. This is why any pet being given such pain medication will need regular vet visits and monitoring. Each drug is different and a dog that does not tolerate Rimadyl very well may respond more favorably to an alternative such as Previcox for example.
All NSAIDs are prescription only pet medicines. But that does not prevent pet owners from seeking out cheaper sources online. Most vets will be happy to write a prescription for your dog’s treatment free of charge. Some may apply a small fee, and if this fee is too large I would strongly recommend you search out an alternative vet that has your pet’s health as more of a priority than their bottom line.
